Experience Night Scuba Diving Silent World Divers Puerto Vallarta
Night diving is one of the most magical experiences you can have as a diver. But diving in the dark does require a little extra preparation to stay safe.
Night dives include equipment you might not use during the day, such as underwater flashlights and tank strobes. Be sure to install the batteries, check the bulbs and familiarize yourself with how these items work beforehand so you’re not fumbling in the dark.
Hand signals are hard to see at night, so night divers use their flashlights for modified signals. For example, wave the beam of your flashlight on the bottom in front of your buddy (never in the eyes) to get her attention.
The best way to prepare for a night dive is to explore the site during the day beforehand. You will know the layout of the reef, your entry and exit points, and exactly which sections of the dive site you want to see.
During the day, it’s easy to navigate by underwater landmarks in good visibility. At night, you will only see the patch of reef illuminated by your flashlight, so your compass is the most reliable way to get around.
Slower is always better underwater. You breathe less air and see more when you take your time. That goes double for night diving. Not to mention that getting lost or having to make a long surface swim can quickly turn from frustrating to dangerous in the dark.
The underwater world changes as day creatures retire & nocturnal organisms emerge. If you’ve wondered what happens underwater after the sun goes down, enroll in the PADI Night Diver Specialty course.
The thought of dipping below the surface at night seems mysterious, yet so alluring. Although you have been scuba diving at a site many times before, at night you drop into a whole new world and watch it come to life under the glow of your dive light. The scene changes as day creatures retire and nocturnal organisms emerge. If you have wondered what happens underwater after the sun goes down, sign up for the PADI Night Diver Specialty course.
Scuba diving at night teaches you to pay attention to details you may overlook during the day. You will learn:
Light handling and communication techniques.
Entering, exiting and navigating in the dark.
Identifying how plants and animals differ or change behavior at night.
Are you afraid of the dark? Many divers are timid about giant striding into a black sea. Follow our tips to just sit back and enjoy the show.
1. START AT DUSK:
You’ll have some daylight to gear up and be underwater as darkness sets in. You’ll also have the chance to see the reef transition from the day shift to the night crew.
2. THINK AHEAD:
Review hand signals before getting in the water. (You can shine the light on your hands so your buddy can see what you’re communicating, or make signals using your light.) Signal “OK,” “Yes” and “No” by moving your light in a circle, up and down, and side to side.
3. USE TWO LIGHTS:
You’ll need a primary and a backup light. The primary should be larger and brighter. Never shine your light in anyone’s face – you’ll ruin his night vision.
4. KNOW THE DRILL:
If your primary light fails, end the dive. If you become separated from your buddy, get vertical, and shine your light outward while turning a full circle. If you surface far from the boat, point your light at the boat until you get the crew’s attention, then shine it down on your head so the crew can see you clearly.
5. FIND YOUR WAY HOME:
The boat or dock should be marked with a flashing strobe to help you navigate back to your starting point. If your operator has other methods or rules, be sure to follow them.
